District Governor 5NE 2010 - 2011
District Governor Robert Littlefield

Email:  r.littlefield@ndsu.edu

Lion Robert S. Littlefield was born in Moorhead, MN, in 1952, the second child of Harry (Jr.) and LeVoyne Littlefield. He graduated from Fargo North High School in 1970, and enrolled at Minnesota State University Moorhead. It was there that Robert met the love of his life, Kathy. He received his teaching degree in English, Speech, and Theatre on May 23, 1974. His graduation day was quite eventful, as he had graduation practice, a job interview, the graduation ceremony, a call from the interviewer offering him the position, and his groom’s dinner, all within eight hours. He and Kathy were married on May 24, 1974, in Moorhead, MN; and that fall, he began his teaching career at the Barnesville (MN) Public Schools.

He joined the North Dakota State University teaching staff in 1979. Two years later, he left NDSU to complete his doctorate at the University of MN, returning as an assistant professor in the fall of 1983.  He has filled several administrative and leadership roles; and he has numerous honors to his credit, including induction into the Pi Kappa Delta National Forensic Hall of Fame and being named the Fargo Moorhead Chamber of Commerce NDSU Distinguished Professor in 2009.

In 1984, Littlefield was introduced to Lionism by PDG Frederick G Walsh. He has served two terms as president of the Fargo Lions--1990-91 and 2005-06. Robert’s feelings for his club and those with whom he has served run deep. His enthusiasm and positive outlook have helped to motivate his fellow Lions to exceed their club goals, whether through fundraising or service projects. Lions across the district, state, and MD5 have appreciated his educational programs at conventions and rallies, his willingness to serve on planning committees for several state and MD5 conventions, and his determination to form new clubs as a Guiding Lion. The Fargo Lions Club twice honored Robert as its Lion of the Year and presented him in 2005 with a Melvin Jones Fellow Award. Through Campaign SightFirst II, he gained his first MJF Progressive Recognition in 2009. Robert has been recognized eight times by four international presidents in the form of certificates of appreciation, commendation, and leadership; the president’s leadership medal; and the diamond pin. He has attended four international conventions, the USA/Canada Forum, and the Great Plains Lions Leadership Institute.

He has several goals for 2010-11, including: 1) providing energetic, steady, and positive leadership for District 5NE; 2) promoting his theme of “Speaking Up for Service through Lionism” by encouraging clubs to sponsor local speech contests, culminating in a district final event at the ND State Lions Convention; and 3) collaborating with Lion leaders in other districts throughout the region and world to be “Beacons of service” for Lionism.

Lion Robert and Kathy have two grown children. Daughter Lindsay Littlefield graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Wake Forest University and received her master’s degree from the University of Texas. She is an analyst for the Texas Legislative Budget Board, is married (Thomas Allen), and gave birth to a son, Emmett, on December 6, 2009. Son Brady Littlefield graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Boston College and now lives in New York City where he works as an associate account executive for Rubenstein Communication, Inc.

Bev Charles was born in Glasgow, Montana, but raised in Dickinson North Dakota; the oldest of eleven children, eight girls and three boys, all of whom live in North Dakota except the youngest. After graduating from Trinity High School, she attended North Dakota State University for two years before marrying Dave Charles, November 23, 1973. Bev and Dave then moved to the Naval Air Station at Lemoore, California for the last two years of Dave’s naval enlistment. They have lived in four states: North Dakota, Montana, Minnesota and California; and ten cities within those four states. She attended four universities: North Dakota State University, Montana State University, Montana Tech of the University of Montana, and the University of Mary; where she graduated in 2005 with honors in Mathematics. Wherever Dave and Bev have lived, they have always been very active in their church, their children’s schools and the communities they have lived in.
Bev first learned about Lions in 2003, when she moved to Bismarck, North Dakota. She received the Club President Excellence Award as President of the Bismarck Prairie Rose Lions for 2007 – 2008. That same year her club earned the District Club of the Year Award. She has been 5NC Zone 2A Chairperson and is also a Certified Guiding Lion. In 2009 Bev graduated from the Great Plains Lions Leadership Institute and also attended the USA/Canada Lions Leadership Forum in Memphis.
Bev and Dave will celebrate their 37th Wedding anniversary this November. They have two daughters and son-in-laws, Ann and Brennon McKenzie and Rebecca and Shane Naslund; and three grandchildren: Warren (6), Luke (3), and Katrina (8 months). They are looking forward to their fourth grandchild, Brogan Eric, this July!
Bev currently works part time at Bismarck Sewing and Quilting as a clerk and instructor teaching classes. She loves spending time with family and friends and sharing new ideas, adventures and learning experiences.
As District Governor, Lion Bev’s goal for this coming year is to build a good foundation for our new western district in North Dakota through team work and relevant fun service.
